THANS saddened by tragedy in Guysborough Co, NS

January 10, 2017

Transition House Association of Nova Scotia (THANS) offers condolences to the family and friends who are impacted by the recent tragedy in Guysborough County, NS.

THANS is saddened that 4 more people have lost their lives in a tragic act of violence, including 2 women and a child.  It is often a wife, spouse, mother or sister who offers the closest support for the men and women that they love. They try to piece together the family unit in a way that allows their loved one to cope in a difficult situation, which can leave them feeling unsafe and vulnerable to violence.

Becky Kent, Provincial Coordinator for THANS says, “There are far too many women in our communities at risk of or experiencing violence.  Many women have accessed services at our shelters and outreach services, and we expect that this tragedy may heighten feelings of being unsafe. Our goal is to make sure that families, in particular women, know that there are supports out there for them.”

The Transition House Association of Nova Scotia (THANS) member organizations can and do provide support to women and children. There are many contributing factors to family violence, and as community partners in this societal issue we are here to help.

Transition House and Outreach services that may help women and children in our communities include:

  • 24 Hour Crises Line
  • Counselling Services
  • Emergency Shelter
  • Safety Planning
  • Referrals to other community Service Providers
  • Assistance with Peace Bonds and Emergency Protection Orders
