Halifax, NS – March 7, 2025 – The Transition House Association of Nova Scotia (THANS) welcomes the provincial government’s $19.8 million commitment to strengthen and stabilize transition houses and other THANS member organizations, which provide essential, life-saving services to women and children experiencing violence.
This investment includes $17.9 million in stabilization funding for THANS member organizations over four years and an additional $1.9 million for programming this upcoming fiscal year. These funds will help THANS member organizations continue their frontline work, ensuring safe shelter, crisis support, and long-term solutions for survivors.
“Our member organizations work around the clock to provide emergency shelter, safety planning, outreach, and support to women and children experiencing violence,” said Ann de Ste Croix, Executive Director of THANS. “This investment recognizes the urgent need for stable, ongoing funding to sustain these vital services and strengthen the network of supports survivors rely on.”
Across Nova Scotia, transition houses and other VAW organizations serve as more than just shelters—they offer critical wraparound services, including risk assessment, safety planning, counseling, system navigation support, and advocacy. Increased funding will help these organizations meet growing demands and expand programming to better serve survivors in their communities.
“Our members have been on the front lines of responding to violence against women for decades,” added de Ste Croix. “This funding is a step toward ensuring that their work remains sustainable and that no survivor is left without support when they need it most.”
