Neighbours, Friends, and Families (NFF)

Neighbours, Friends, and Families (NFF) is a public education program developed by Western University that helps communities recognize the warning signs of domestic violence and respond in safe and supportive ways. The program provides practical tools for having difficult conversations, supporting survivors, and safely addressing abusive behavior.

As Nova Scotia’s official partner with Western University's Centre for Research and Education on Violence Against Women & Children (CREVAWC), THANS serves as the provincial hub for NFF, delivering community workshops and train-the-trainer sessions across the province. Through these sessions, participants gain knowledge, resources, and strategies to strengthen their role as active bystanders and create safer, more supportive communities.

Leading Change™ at Work: Addressing Domestic Violence

Leading Change at Work: Addressing Intimate Partner & Domestic Violence is a national workplace training designed to equip employers, managers, and employees with the knowledge and tools to recognize, respond to, and prevent the impacts of intimate partner and domestic violence in the workplace.

Understanding & Responding to GBV in Our Communities

Developed by THANS, this training is designed to build knowledge, empathy, and practical skills to help participants recognize, respond to, and prevent GBV in their communities. Grounded in trauma-informed principles and community-centered values, the workshop is interactive and adaptable.

Participants will explore the root causes of GBV, learn to identify signs of intimate partner and domestic violence (IPV/DV), and develop foundational bystander and safety planning skills.

Understanding & Recognizing Coercive Control - Training for First Responders

Coercive control is one of the most dangerous yet least visible forms of intimate partner violence and a strong predictor of domestic homicide.

Developed by THANS, this training equips first responders—particularly law enforcement—with the knowledge to identify its indicators, understand its impacts, and detect risk before it escalates. Drawing on Canadian and international research, frontline realities, and recent policy developments such as Bill C-332, the session explores how coercive control operates and why it is often overlooked or minimized.
