Principle Duties: Bryony House is an emergency shelter that serve women experiencing intimate partner violence. The role of Children’s Counsellor is a critical part of the support we provide. Supports that include: supportive counseling, supporting children in processing their trauma in playroom sessions; intake of children coming into the shelter; safety planning, advocacy, referrals, parental support, documentation, as well as light household duties that support residents during their stay at the shelter.
Qualifications: Bachelor of Child and Youth degree or equivalent area of study and experience working with children with complex needs.
- Thorough knowledge of child developmental stages
- Understanding of the cycle of abuse and its impact on women and children
- Knowledge of Trauma Informed Practice
- Crisis intervention experience and experience working with women and children who have experienced trauma
- Certificate of Completion of the PEACE Program for Children and Youth would be an asset.
- Proven skills development in working with children of varying ages (infants – teens)
- Basic working knowledge of commonly used computer programs such as Microsoft Word, etc.
- Valid First Aid and CPR
- Clear Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector check required
Hours of Work: Must be available on a continual basis throughout the year, called in as needed to work on an hourly basis, day time (8am to 4pm) and evening shifts (12 pm to 8pm).
Position Type: We are a unionized workplace and the Relief Children’s Counsellor is a union position.
Wage: As per the current collective agreement.
