Facts and Figures

From 1st January- 31 December 2018 the member organizations of THANS registered an approximate total of 1800 clients experiencing domestic and family violence. This figure includes 278 children, 78 youth, and 112 seniors. Our staff assisted on 252 cases who were designated “High Risk”, and supported 154 Emergency Protection Orders. They provided court accompaniment and support to 103 women who had to navigate the criminal justice system as a result of domestic violence. Child support, various outreach activities, advocacy, public education and free 24/7 shelter and basic necessities to those who need it are among the programs and services offered by THANS members organizations.

Pamela Gerhardt Applications

The Pamela Gerhardt Fund Application to support clients and former clients of Transition Houses and Women’s Centres is now open. The deadline to submit applications is 30 July. For further details, visit: http://thans.ca/1000-award-women-education-training-small-business-deadline-july-30-2019/

Indigenous Women and Domestic Violence

Indigenous women face family and domestic violence at triple the rate of their non-Indigenous counterparts.[1] They also face additional challenges when seeking support. THANS organizations regularly serve Indigenous and First nations women, from whom they have heard that sometimes Indigenous culture is misunderstood or disregarded in larger mainstream service-providers.

THANS is proud to include Mi’kmaw Family Healing Centres at Millbrook & We’koqma’q First Nations who offer culturally competent services to Indigenous and First Nations families, in our association, and welcomes Bev Walker, their new Managing Director to the THANS Board. Bev has worked for shelters for 21 years. She provides training on how to support Indigenous and First Nations clients in a culturally-sensitive and appropriate manner. If your organization would like to arrange a training session with her, contact beverly.walker@novascotia.ca or call (902) 893-8483.
