bryonyHalifax Transition House Association (Bryony House) Bryony House is a 24 bed shelter for abused women and their children. Established in 1978 by the Halifax Transition House Association, it is Nova Scotia’s first transition house. Bryony House was founded on feminist principles which form much of the governance and provision of service of the association. Bryony House is seeking an experienced individual for the position of Executive Director.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for Bryony House staff, programs, growth, and execution of the mission. The ED represents the Association to regulatory bodies, other agencies, community and civic organizations, donors, funders and supporters, and the general public. As the successful candidate, you will ensure that the activities and programs of the Association are carried out according to the values and standards established by the Association as per the mission statement and goals and objectives.

Key Responsibilities Leadership and Management  Hire, train and coach Bryony House staff, ensuring that all team members are well trained and competent  Develop and implement plans, policies, and goals that further strategic objectives  Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, and communications  Use strategies to build team morale and productivity; promote a friendly and cooperative environment  Model the conduct you expect from the team Teamwork  Work collaboratively as part of a diverse team to achieve desired results  Collaborate with Board of Directors and staff  Formulate and implement corrective action as needed  Create a climate of trust and mutual respect where staff feel valued and motivated Interpersonal / Communication Skills  Respectfully and effectively interact and communicate with others  Acknowledge, model, and support self-care for all  Identify and resolve problems by using a structured, informed, and evidence based approach to decision making  Cultivate positive relationships with staff, board, other agencies, community and civic organizations, donors, funders and supporters, and the general public  Seek, apply, and successfully secure grant funding Financial Management  Maintain full awareness of the complete financial, statistical, and accounting records of the association  Ensure the operating results established in the annual budget are achieved and the control of operating expenses are within budget  Work with the board to ensure adequate and sustainable funding for the operation of Bryony House  Ensure the preparation of the annual budget for board approval  Ensure the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of all financial accounting and reporting Qualifications  The ED will be thoroughly committed to Bryony House’s non-profit mission.

All candidates should have proven leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience. Concrete demonstrable experience and other qualifications include:  Advanced degree, preferably a Masters’ degree in Social Work, Psychology, Education, Women’s Studies, Public or Business Administration  Minimum of 5 years of progressive senior management experience in a voluntary sector organization  Understanding of applicable laws and issues related to inter-partner violence against women in Nova Scotia  Demonstrable ability to promote and work within an integrated feminist and anti-racist antioppression framework  Must be familiar with Trauma Informed Care  Past success working with a board of directors  Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performing teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget  Marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures  Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal skills that demonstrate conflict resolution, problem solving and effective delegation abilities
